| You know most of those "You're the referee" things you sometimes see on TV? Well, I have this thing in my SI Kids magazine called "What's the Call?" which is based on that. There will be 5 points for a correct answer. Also, you guys can make up your own ones. Here's the first one: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Hit (By Pitch) or Miss?
The Colorado Rockies and the Detroit Tigers are playing a baseball game under MLB Rules (of course). Rockies starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is facing Tigers cleanup hitter Magglio Ordonez in the bottom of the second inning. Jimenez gets ahead in the count - one ball and two strikes - and unleashes a wicked curveball off the inside corner. Expecting a fastball, Ordonez is fooled badly. He takes a mighty swing and misses by a mile. But the ball has so much break, it hits Ordonez's back foot before reaching the catcher. Jimenez believes he has a swinging strikeout, but Ordonez begins to trot down to first base since he believes he was hit by the pitch.
You're the umpire. What's the call?

| No, but it's a good try.
It's strike 3. A pitch that the batter swung at is a strike even if the ball ended up hitting the batter.
Here's an easier one: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Ground Game
Situation: The Oakland Raiders and the Philadelphia Eagles are playing a football game under NFL Rules. On second down, Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell tucks the ball and scrambles. Seeing two Eagles defenders chasing him, Russell dives headfirst for the first down, slamming the ball on the turf before an opponent reaches him. The ball comes out of Russell's hand after his knees hit the ground, but before any defender has touched him. Two Eagles defensemen pounce on the ball and begin to celebrate. But Russell argues that the ground can't cause a fumble.

| CORRECT! 5 points for LB!!!!
It's a fumble! Since Russell was never touched by a defender, the ball is still live. Philadelphia takes over after the turnover.

NEXT QUESTION (It's a little tougher) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Duke University and North Carolina University are playing a lacrosse game under NCAA rules. Duke attacker Gibbs Fogarty makes a pass near the end line before his momentum carries him out of bounds. A teammate immediately passes the ball back to Fogarty, who leaps from out of bounds, catches the ball, and lands in bounds.
You're the ref. Is Fogarty considered out of bounds? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next one: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Bent out of shape
Fred Funk is playing a tournament under USGA Rules of Golf. On the par-5 9th hole, Funk decides to use his driver. He takes a huge swing and hooks his ball deep into the woods. Frustrated, Funk slams his club against the ground and bends the shaft. On the 10th hole, Funk decides to go with the driver again, despite the club's U-shaped shaft. Remarkably, he hits the ball perfectly down the middle of the fairway. Another golfer suggests that Funk's shot was against the rules because of the bent club.
You're a rules official. Is Funk's shot legal?

| I thought that as long as it wasn't, like, snapped in half or something you could use it, as long as it still conforms to USGA (United States Golf Association) standards. I finished 3rd in a golf tournament last weekend. It was at a kid's course, but still... | |

| CORRECT!!!! 5 points for PPMaster!
Funk is DQ'd. A club that is damged outside of the normal course of play can't be used.
Next one: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: The Ol' Switcheroo
The Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox are playing a game under MLB Rules. Red Sox switch-hitter Jason Varitek steps in to bat lefty against Chad Bradford, a righty. But Bradford can throw with either hand (this is just what the magazine says, bear with me!), so he switches his glove and begins to throw lefty. Varitek quickly jumps into the right-handed batters box.Tampa Bay protests the switch.
You're the ump. Can Varitek change sides? Hint: the Venditte rule comes into effect here.

| I KNOW!!!
The batter can choose whatever side he wants to bat from but the pitcher must decide when they FIRST TAKE THE MOUND what hand they will use and must use it during the entire time they are pitching.
Edit: in other words, bradford is against the rules in this situation

| Well, tell me if this is correct or not, if you can.
Varitek's switch is legal. Players can change the side of the plate they bat from or the hand they pitch with only once per plate appearance. Varitek can move to the right-handed batters box, but Bradford can't change back to throwing righty.
No more puzzles for right now.

- Hence, the establishment of the Venditte Rule, recently adopted by the Professional Baseball Umpires Corporation (PBUC) after consulting with Major League Baseball's Rules Committee.
Basically it states that the pitcher must visually indicate to the ump which arm he'll use at the beginning of the at-bat and the hitter can then select from which side of the plate he'll swing. After one pitch is thrown, the hitter and pitcher can only switch one time during the at-bat.

New Puzzle!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Hockey 911
Situation: The Calgary Flames and the Detroit Red Wings are playing a hockey game under NHL Rules. Calgary Defenseman Deion Phaneuf is called for a tripping penalty. Detroit retains posession after the infraction, and during the delayed penalty, Phaneuf crashes into the boards while chasing a loose puck, suffering a mild concussion. Phaneuf has to head to the locker room becuase of the injury, and won't be able to serve his 2-minute penalty.
You're the ref. Is Calgary allowed to choose which teammate serves the penalty, or is it the Red Wings' choice? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
